History of North Carolina

The earliest settlers in what is now known as North Carolina lived there at least 10,000 years ago. The North Carolina landscape made it the perfect area for hunters and gatherers to call home. As centuries passed, numerous Native American tribes such as the Cherokee, Woodland, and Mississippian tribes resided in North Carolina.

Europeans first came to North Carolina in the 1500s. It became the 12th colony in 1789, shortly after the United States declared its independence from Great Britain. North Carolina was also one of the 11 Confederate States that fought against the Union during the Civil War.

Why Is It Called The Tar Heel State?

The Tar Heel State might sound like a funny nickname for a state, but the name actually has an interesting story behind it. Workers in North Carolina used to sell tar, pitch and turpentine from the state’s longleaf pine trees to be used in wooden ships. Legend has it that British soldiers were slowed down when they stepped in the sticky North Carolina tar during the Revolutionary War. This was never proven true or false, but North Carolinians will adamantly say it’s true. This is also where the University of North Carolina got its name, the “Tar Heels”.

"First in Flight"

Who Were The Wright Brothers?

Have you ever paid any attention to a North Carolina license plate? If you have, you would have noticed it says “First in Flight” on it. You can thank the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville, for that! They completed the first successful airplane ride in the dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. The plane was gasoline-powered, propeller-driven, and stayed aloft for 12 seconds while covering 120 feet on its inaugural flight.
